As people around the world recognize March 8th as International Women’s Day, we invite you to revisit Women and Spirituality, a National Film Board of Canada (NFB) documentary series dating from 1985 to 1989 for which Loreena wrote the original music.

“We, as women, must always remember to recognize each other’s achievements, while acknowledging there is much work yet to be done,” says Loreena. “This day of global significance is meaningful for women all over the world.”

Each of the NFB pieces runs just under an hour and two of them are now available for streaming (in Canada-only). The first, Goddess Remembered , is described as ‘a salute to the goddess-worshipping religions on the ancient past, featuring discussions linking the loss of goddess-centred societies with today’s environmental crisis’. The Burning Times is about ‘an in-depth look at the witch-hunts that swept through Europe a few hundred years ago’. The third segment, Full Circle, features authors, teachers, social activists and feminists exploring manifestations of contemporary women’s spirituality in the Western world, but is not yet available for streaming.

Wrote one woman who viewed the series, “all our daughters need to see this. So do our sons…This series is as perfect as you can get…and introduced Loreena McKennitt to a wide audience.”
